Manny Pacquiao fan postpones son's appendectomy to meet him

A Manny Pacquiao fan said she postponed her son's appendectomy so she could attend a recent Pacquiao media day appearance at Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood.

"He probably has appendicitis, he's in the hospital, but he knows how much Manny means to me so he said, 'Go Mom,' " the fan said of her son. "He didn't want to keep me back.

"I'm not a horrible mom. He's not in total danger. Dad's there with him."

Pacquiao attracts legions of fans who exhibit an almost religious-like zeal wherever he goes.

Last Wednesday at 7 a.m. dozens of fans were waiting outside in the cold at Griffith Park, where Pacquiao regularly runs, in hopes of meeting the boxer. Some had said they had been sitting there for hours.

The Times interviewed a few fans who had flown to Los Angeles from the Philippines to watch the fight.

They provided a snapshot of the excitement brewing in their country as Pacquiao, who is a congressman in the Philippines, approaches his third bout against Marquez.

On the day of the fight, one fan said that there's "zero crime." Another said there's "no traffic."

"Everything stops," he said. "The business stops. They all watch Manny."
