News Flash: Floyd agrees to fight Pacquiao in May 2012 according to reports

MANILA, Philippines – The camp of Floyd Mayweather Jr. has indicated that the undefeated American may face Filipino boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao in May next year.

“Team Mayweather is looking forward to make the biggest fight possible and everyone knows what that fight is,” said Mayweather’s adviser Leonard Ellerbe in Fighthype.com.

Mayweather’s camp apparently agreed on the superfight after hearing the news that Pacquiao has agreed to Floyd’s random drug-testing demand.

“That's news to us, but that's great to hear. Now hopefully the fans will finally get what they want to see,” said Ellerbe.

A separate report by ESPN.com said Mayweather wants the fight on May 5, 2012 in Las Vegas. Pacquiao had actually agreed to the demand a long time ago.

The rub

Ellerbe, however, claimed that Pacquiao agreed to have the drug testing done by the US Anti Doping Agency (USADA).

This is contrary to the earlier statements made by Pacquiao’s boxing promoter, Bob Arum, that it would be done by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) as well as the USADA.

“That's great to hear that they are now ready to take the same USADA random blood and urine test that Floyd, Shane Mosley, and Victor Ortiz have already taken. This is great for the sport of boxing and I commend [him] for stepping up to the plate,” said Ellerbe.

Arum earlier said that the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), the umbrella agency which covers USADA, would handle Pacquiao's testing because the Filipino trains half the time in the Philippines.

"The testing would have to be done by WADA, which means when Manny trains in the Philippines, whoever they use in Asia to do the testing would do it," Arum had said.

Arum had also said Pacquiao will submit himself to USADA when he transfers his camp to the US.

"When Manny is training in the United States, they would use USADA. WADA gets the agency to supervise the testing in the Philippines,” he added. "But the point is, it all has to be done under the overall authority of the boxing commission wherever you have the fight."
